What is Gantt chart?

According to wikipedia, 
A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart, adapted by Karol Adamiecki in 1896, and independently by Henry Gantt in the 1910s, that illustrates a project schedule. Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary elements of a project.
Gantt chart commonly used in project management.  It shows what are the activities to be done and when it will be finished.

It is also allows the user to see the following at glance:
  • What the various activities
  • When each activity start and end
  • How long each activity is scheduled to last
  • Where activities overlap with other activities, and by how much
  • The start and end date of the whole project
