HOW TO: Reformat Sony Xperia

Sometimes, you really need to format your phone once-in-a-while. Too many installed apps become slower and need to reinstate its standard settings and everything.
But Sony Xperia has quite complicated procedures when reformatting the Android phone.
So how to reformat with Sony Xperia?

Device Freezes

If your device freezes often, you can force it to reset the device. To achieve it: (in most version of Xperia)
  • Just press and hold down the Power button key + Volume Key
Another version could be simply like this:
  • Press and hold Camera key + volume up key+ power button together
Possible reasons why we need to reformat
Reformatting the device makes refresh the data/settings/appearance/performance. This is more likely be a new phone.
Now, the possible reasons why do we need to reformat are but not limited to:
  • Too many apps installed.
  • Performance is slow
  • Probably has a virus
  • Theme got ripped off
  • Forgotten password/Screen Lock/Pin
HOW TO: Reformat Sony Xperia
Before anything else, you need to do the following precautions:
  • First, make sure the phone's battery is charged about 50%, or it is advisable to make it full
  • Back up important data especially from your SD Card(you may save it other's device or hard drives)
  • To be safer, take out your SIM and SD Card(though in reformatting process, it has an option not to include SD card to erase data).
Go to your Settings -> Privacy -> Factory Data Reset -> Reset Phone -> Erase Everything.
It will clear and erase all contents like password, apps, and settings.
But what if you have a problem with your Screen Lock pattern or Unlock Slide screen(in which I have experienced).
You need Sony's tool to perform resetting and reformatting. Best buddy Sony Tools:
  • Flash Tool (we need it to perform resetting of devices)
  • PC Companion(Use to backup and update the firmware version – this is the partner of Flash Tool because if Emma or Flash Tool detects you need to update your version, then PC Companion is very useful)
Flash Tool is a Sony's Tool and is actually called Emma(which I don't know where it came from) used to reset devices and runs in all Windows computers.
Download here: Xperia for All Devices
Install Flash Tool:
  • Download the file above and Unzip the file.
  • Run as Admin the Emma.exe
    • Default path in Windows 64 bit is: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony Mobile\Emma\”
    • Default path in Windows 32 bit is: “C:\Program Files\Sony Mobile\Emma\”
  • In the Flash_Tool_for_Xperia_X folder, copy the customization.ini and paste it to the installation folder.
      • Default path in Windows 64 bit is: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony Mobile\Emma\”
      • Default path in Windows 32 bit is: “C:\Program Files\Sony Mobile\Emma\”
  • Restart your system
  • Then Open Emma in the All Programs and wait for a file to download or it needs to be updated.
If the Flash Tool for Xperia has been successfully installed, you can now unlock Xperia devices. Take extra precaution when doing it. I assume, you backup all data in another part of any hard drives. Because it could erase all content and user data. And of course, has a full battery charged.
How to Flash Xperia Device Using Flash Tool
  • First, you need to open Emma( Run as administrator)
  • Turn off your phone first
  • Then Connect your Phone to the USB cable WHILE holding the flash KEY. For some models, the flash key is different models.

  • It will display Service lists. You can select the software you want. Don't Worry it will automatically detect the phone model and list available version.
  • Now, Click on Apply Service. Thus, your phone will now be reset.
  • When it flashed, you can disconnect your device from a computer. Take note: that it could take a little time longer.
  • Congrats! ^_^
I did it with the Sony Xperia Go, and upon connecting the device, it already unlocks the screen slide lock. Then, it displays to reset the phone, and it will start to reset the device upon boot up.

For an entirely valid reason, this Emma will prompt you to install the latest firmware on your device. And that's what PC Companion will jump in and help us achieving in resetting the Xperia device.

PC Companion is an excellent tool for Sony Xperia models. It has Xperia Transfer, software updates, backup and restore contacts and calendar,  and organize your media content(Media Go).
