Why does Pope Benedict XVI resigns being as head of the Church?

Pope Benedict XVI, 85 year old pope, the first to resign as Pope in the last 700 years. Pope Benedict became a pope in 2005 following Pope John Paul II's death.

Before being a Pope Benedict XVI, he was Joseph Ratzinger, and he was considered as one of the oldest popes when elected at the age of 78.

Why does he step down as pope?

According to the BBC, pope said he will no longer be suited as a Pope because of his health issues.
"I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry..
....both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."
