Happy Holidays: A Greeting from Google

Today, the Google Doodle greets a Happy Holidays on each one of us. Despite of the fact that in Philippines, it traditionally celebrates Christmas with Family, Friends and Love ones, on the other hand, Google choose to feature a Happy Holidays(which has many meanings) instead.

On my research, however, take note that Google Corp. resides in the United States, "Happy Holiday", is a substitution for "Merry Christmas" or at least a short term for "Merry Christmas and the Happy New Year".

Greeting from Google

a Holiday greetings, which according to Wikipedia:

Holiday greetings are a selection of goodwill greetings used around the world to address strangers, family, coworkers or friends during the Christmas and holiday season.

Its a goodwill greetings to all the people in the world during holiday season. And with that, Google featured a Happy Holiday - with a design of colorful posters with toys having fun celebration going to the land of Google or Google City.

History of the word "Merry"

Although, in  the United States, the phrase "Merry Christmas" had been substituted by the phrase "Happy Holiday" way back in 1970s.

But it has other variations too. Happy Holiday is:
  • a greeting on passover, Thanksgiving, Epiphany, sukkot, shavout, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Winter solstice, Christmas Day (The Nativity of the Lord), Boxing Day (St. Stephen's Day), the New Year and Epiphany.
In the other part of the world, Merry Christmas is a popular phrase. And you might wonder what Merry really means.

According to Wikipedia:

"Merry", derived from the Old English myrige, originally meant merely "pleasant, agreeable" rather than joyous or jolly (as in the phrase "merry month of May").
